Taking Part

As a charity we rely totally on the great work and dedication of our volunteers. We are hugely grateful to all of you who have helped Opera South continue to put on wonderful events and support young singers and our educational programme over several years.

However, we are always looking for new volunteers to help us deliver our aims and now we need your help! For a year-round commitment, we are currently actively seeking volunteers of all ages to join our dedicated team as:

  • Treasurer
  • Admin Assistant for each of the Chairman, the Music Director and the Development Manager.
  • Chorus Manager – working with the Music Director
  • Events Co-ordinator – working with the Development Manager
  • Friends’ Secretary – working with the Development Manager
  • Advertising Sales Manager – working with the Development Manager

Ideally you have a can-do attitude and around four hours across the week to spare and are competent in book-keeping (Treasurer). You are good with people, organised and computer literate (and have Microsoft Office 10) for the other roles. Work would be from home with occasional meetings in our region. We are also in need of volunteers to distribute flyers and posters up to three times a year throughout your local part of Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex.

On the production side, whilst the requirements of every event are very different we always need people with the relevant skills willing to do whatever is needed to put a show on – from set building, helping with costumes and make-up, to carrying equipment and making tea and cakes!

So, if you’ve got one day a year, or around four hours a week that you can spare to help us and you want to be part of Opera South and our exciting rejuvenation:

The Chorus

Opera South has an auditioned volunteer chorus which works hard and has a lot of fun while performing to a professional standard. We are always keen to hear from talented singers of all ages who are able to commit to taking part in full-scale productions.

The chorus performs on average around 2-3 projects a year, which may include one staged production and one or two concert performances. Rehearsals for a production begin with weekly music calls, followed by staging work probably at weekends, spread over a period of about 6 weeks, culminating in a final production week of evening rehearsals and then around 4 shows. If you would like to be considered for an audition, please register your interest by emailing to music@operasouth.co.uk

The Soloists

Opera South offers performance opportunities for exceptional young opera singers in the final stages of their training or in the first years of their career. These include fully-staged productions, concert performances and recitals. Recent soloists have gone on to sing at houses including Deutsche Oper, Opera North, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Volkstheater Rostock, Glyndebourne and Garsington.

If you are interested in auditioning, please register with Music@Operasouth.co.uk It is also essential that you follow our Twitter at twitter/operasouth where we will post details of audition opportunities and requirements.
