Bastien et Bastienne - An Incomplete Education
16th, 17th, 24th July - Staged outdoors in 2 beautiful locations
Bastien & Bastienne: Music by W. A. Mozart, Libretto by F.W. Weiskern, J.H. Muller, & J.A. Schachtner, English translation by Mark Austin
An Incomplete Education: Music by E. Chabrier, Libretto by E. Leterrier & A. Vanloo, English translation by James Hurley
Opera South presents a unique opportunity to enjoy a riotous double-bill of rarely performed one-act comedies by two of opera’s most witty and inventive composers. Mozart wrote BASTIEN when he was just 12 years old but his charming pastoral about a young couple who doubt the sincerity of each other’s feelings displays much of the comic and vocal flair which would flourish in his later works.
Chabrier’s EDUCATION is a lively and intimate operetta about a pair of inexperienced newlyweds and their awkward first night together, packed with the French composer’s signature fizz and fun.
Starring some of the UK’s most exciting emerging singers, the performances will be staged in unique outdoor locations in the Haslemere area, and directed from the keyboard by Opera South’s musical director, Mark Austin.
